Business and Human rights
The project sought to raise the level of protection and respect for human rights by technology companies and organizations in the field of digital rights.
In 2011, the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC) approved the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. The “OPs”, as they are known, establish the roles and responsibilities of states and companies to ensure the protection, respect and reparation of human rights in the private sector.
Despite their adoption, in practice compliance with and commitment to the OPs has not reflected the current challenges related to the development, implementation and access to Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), which include growing and significant risks to human rights. Against this backdrop, this project aims to increase the level of protection and respect for human rights by technology companies in the light of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights.
The project is being carried out in Brazil, by InternetLab, and in 5 other countries: Argentina (Asociación por los Derechos Civiles – ADC), Indonesia (The Institute for Policy Research and Advocacy – ELSAM), Kenya (The Bloggers Association of Kenya – BAKE), Nigeria (Paradigm Initiative – PIN) and Malaysia (The IO Foundation – TIOF), and is coordinated by Global Partners Digital (GPD) in partnership with the Global Network Initiative (GNI).
